Help needed: Sports Advertising survey

Ric Jensen at South Dakota is doing a study on sports advertising and needs student participants for a survey. If you could pass this along to your students (or if you are a student yourself) ... it would help him greatly in his research. More information about the study is below.

The JSM blog is always happy to pass along such items. E-mail me directly (bschultz@olemiss.edu) if you have something that needs a wider distribution.

The University of South Dakota is looking for college students to participate in a web-based research study about sports advertising. The study wants to know what they think about possibly putting large ads on the uniforms of Major League Soccer teams and other sports.

The survey should take less than 30 minutes to complete; it is anonymous and confidential. Participants also have the change to enter a random drawing to win an authentic Major League Soccer jersey.

Students can access the survey here. For questions or more information please contact:

CFP: IJEV

It's a lot of letters and looks like some secret Russian agency, but it's actually a call for a special sports issue of the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Venturing. The issue will be called "Sport as Entrepreneurial Venture" and the deadline for paper submission is June 2010.

According to the call, "The purpose of this special issue is to investigate the relationship between sport and entrepreneurial ventures. Many sport activities involve an entrepreneurial venture as change and innovation are critical to the continued development and success of the sport sector. The current literature on sport has to a large extent ignored the entrepreneurial literature and the aim of this special issue is to develop a better understanding of entrepreneurial ventures in sport and sport-related industries."

NASSS

With the talk of growing sport scholarship and what's going on around the country, we don't want to neglect the work of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport. NASSS has been around more than 30 years and has an upcoming conference in Ottawa (although it's too late to submit for the November 2009 conference you can still register to attend).

NASSS is truly an international organization (which we need more of). If you're interested you can check out their website or newsletter. There are several contributors to JSM who also work with NASSS, including Richard King of Washington State, who is on the NASSS Executive Board. Thanks to Marie Hardin at Penn State for reminding me of the work this group is doing in sport scholarship.

NCA Sports Comm

I realize we talk a lot here about AEJMC and effort to create a new sports division, but we should also remember that the National Communications Association (NCA) has already created its own division. The upcoming (November 12-15 in Chicago) NCA National Convention will feature several pieces of sports scholarship, including several from people who have contributed to or helped JSM in the past.

JSM fully supports the work of sports scholars within NCA. Even though our purposes and research don't often intersect, the field is large enough for everyone who has an interest in sports scholarship.

Our congratulations to those who will present sports research at NCA and we continue to seek ways to make our divergent agendas more inclusive.

Back from Boston

Got back from Boston yesterday and a successful trip to AEJMC (although truth be told, I spent much more time in the city than at the conference. I even made it to the minor league game at Fenway on Saturday; here's my view from the right field bleachers).

We had a good meeting regarding the potential sports interest group. The formal presentation will be made in December and those involved have very high hopes for success. It was a very good sign that there was a lot of sports scholarship at the conference, including several papers from graduate students.

Although we technically have enough signatures (from AEJMC members) to present the petition, it would help our case to get as many as possible. If you are interested in this please contact Marie Hardin at Penn State--mch208@psu.edu. Thanks to Marie, Scott Reinardy and others at the meeting last Thursday for moving this issue forward.

Off to Boston ...

Off to Boston tomorrow for the AEJMC Convention and won't be back until next week. If I see or hear anything interesting I'll pass it along, but otherwise we'll be in blog blackout for awhile.

In the meantime, in honor of our host city ... enjoy.

More Odds and Ends

Some things that have been sitting in my in box that need passed along ...

1. The Department of Exercise, Sport and Leisure Studies at the University of Tennessee is looking for an Assistant/Associate Professor in Sport Management (tenure track). You can find more information here, including deadlines and requirements.

2. The University of Nebraska Press, which publishes the Journal of Sports Media, has enhanced its journal website. You can now browse and purchase back issues online. If you go to the journal's home page and click on one of the subscription drop-down boxes, you'll see "single issue" as an option. Selecting that option brings up a "browse single issues link, and by clicking on the link you'll get a list of available issues, and in most cases, tables of contents for those issues.

3. There is a call for contributors for a book coming out entitled Game Women, Sport and its Female Fans by Kim Toffoletti and Peter Mewett, eds. According to the call, "We invite chapter proposals for an edited book on women fans of sports. The book seeks to explore why women follow sports and the significance of their contribution. We are interested in what female fandom can tell us about gender relations in sport and the changing nature of sport spectatorship." Please submit abstracts of 200-250 words and a brief author bio by 5 August 2009 to either or both editors (and direct any queries to the editors) at:

kim.toffoletti@deakin.edu.au or
peter.mewett@deakin.edu.au

4. Finally, a reminder that the blog for the new Sports Division of BEA is now up and running. The blog takes the place of the newsletter, so check it out for the latest on news and upcoming deadlines.
